A young painter from Chefchaouen, the blue town in the Rif mountains, and the special guest of this exhibition. Her wall has one job: every painting sold helps pay for her medical care.
Una joven pintora de Chefchaouen, el pueblo azul de las montañas del Rif, y la invitada especial de esta exposición. Su pared tiene una sola misión: cada cuadro vendido ayuda a pagar su atención médica.

Chaimae paints the way she sees: trees that twist and reach, rivers that wander off the edge of the canvas, flowers that look like they were invited personally.
She is on the autism spectrum, and art is how she speaks. It's where she grows, where she connects with people, and where her focus and patience show on every inch of canvas. Her teachers and the RifCom volunteers who know her have watched that talent grow year after year.
Life also asks a lot of Chaimae. Behind her vibrant, expressive canvases lies a gruelling, lifelong health battle with epilepsy, a cardiac condition, functional impairment, developmental delays and psychological issues. All of them require specialised, continuous medical care to maintain her mobility, her health and life itself. This care costs in excess of €10,000 a year, far beyond anything her family can afford.
RifCom has launched a campaign to help with that, and to help her show and sell her work so that one day her painting can help pay her own way.
This December her canvases cross the Strait to hang alongside Jorge Caballero's work at the Gustavo Bacarisas Gallery in Gibraltar.
Chaimae pinta como mira: árboles que se retuercen y se estiran, ríos que se escapan por el borde del lienzo, flores que parecen invitadas en persona.
Está dentro del espectro autista, y el arte es su manera de hablar. Ahí crece, ahí se relaciona con los demás, y ahí se nota su concentración y su paciencia en cada centímetro de lienzo. Sus profesores y los voluntarios de RifCom que la conocen han visto crecer ese talento año tras año.
La vida también le pide mucho a Chaimae. Detrás de sus lienzos llenos de color y expresión hay una lucha dura y de por vida contra la epilepsia, una afección cardíaca, una discapacidad funcional, retrasos en el desarrollo y problemas psicológicos. Todo ello exige una atención médica especializada y continua para mantener su movilidad, su salud y su propia vida. Ese cuidado cuesta más de 10.000 € al año, muy por encima de lo que su familia puede permitirse.
RifCom ha abierto una campaña para ayudar con eso, y para que pueda exponer y vender su obra, de modo que algún día su pintura le ayude a salir adelante por sí misma.
Este diciembre sus lienzos cruzan el Estrecho y se cuelgan junto a la obra de Jorge Caballero en la Galería Gustavo Bacarisas de Gibraltar.

I've been up to the Rif with RifCom and seen their projects with my own eyes. Small teams of volunteers, a lot of goodwill, and things that actually get done.
When they showed me Chaimae's paintings, I saw a young artist with real potential.
I've been lucky. I get to paint for a living, on this side of the Strait. If my exhibition can give a young painter from the other side a wall, a room full of new eyes and maybe a few sales, I can't think of a better use for it.
He subido al Rif con RifCom y he visto sus proyectos con mis propios ojos. Equipos pequeños de voluntarios, mucha buena voluntad y cosas que de verdad se hacen.
Cuando me enseñaron los cuadros de Chaimae, vi a una artista joven con potencial de verdad.
He tenido suerte: vivo de pintar, en esta orilla del Estrecho. Si mi exposición puede darle a una joven pintora de la otra orilla una pared, una sala llena de miradas nuevas y quizá alguna venta, no se me ocurre mejor uso para ella.

The Rif Community Foundation is a small charity run entirely by volunteers from Gibraltar and Spain. Its neighbours are the villages of the Rif mountains in northern Morocco: close enough to see from the Rock on a clear day, and still living in poverty.
Their work is practical and unglamorous. They support rural schools, health care and training, sport for the children, and cooperatives that help families earn their own income. The idea is always the same: projects the villages can own and keep going themselves.
Chaimae's campaign is one of theirs. Arte Caballero supports RifCom, and you can add a donation to them at checkout on this site.
The Rif Community Foundation es una pequeña ONG llevada solo por voluntarios de Gibraltar y España. Sus vecinos son los pueblos de las montañas del Rif, al norte de Marruecos: tan cerca que se ven desde el Peñón en un día claro, y aún viviendo en la pobreza.
Su trabajo es práctico y sin postureo. Apoyan escuelas rurales, salud y formación, deporte para los niños y cooperativas que ayudan a las familias a ganarse la vida. La idea es siempre la misma: proyectos que los propios pueblos puedan hacer suyos y mantener.
